Trilogy’s Voilà Announce Commercial Launch of Haiti’s First Mobile Money Service

Haiti-based wireless operator Voilà, Haitian bank Unibank and international aid agency Mercy Corps have partnered to launch first-to-market mobile banking services to Haiti – maximizing NGO resources, bolstering reconstruction efforts, and providing access to financial services for Haiti’s unbanked population. FACT: 85% of Haitian households have access to a cell phone. FACT: There are 2 banks for every 100,000 people in Haiti. FACT: 100,000 people will gain critical banking access through Mercy Corps’ cash programs, using their Voilà phones as mobile wallets. Mercy Corps’ adoption of Voilà’s and Unibank’s mobile money service, called T-Cash, will lead the way to dramatically increase access to banking services for Haiti’s rural poor. Mercy Corps’ cash program beneficiaries will use the T-CASH service to receive and make payments, using their Voilà phone to purchase food and non-food items from a network of affiliated merchants throughout the provinces.
